All tubes are in parallel. That is why the pressure drop is very small. This unit works for processes that cannot accept a big pressure drop. Small flow process fluids often use this single pass type. For example, a special chemical with a flow rate of only 10 m³/h would have low speed and poor heat transfer in a multi‑pass unit. Single pass keeps the speed in a good range. Laboratories and pilot plants also like single pass units because they are simple and easy to clean. In refrigeration systems, if the pressure drop for evaporating or condensing refrigerant must be very small, we use single pass. We have a research institute customer in China. They run a pilot experiment with a flow rate of only 5 m³/h. We designed a single pass shell and tube heat exchanger for them. The tube side runs hot fluid. The shell side runs cooling water. The pressure drop was only 0.02 MPa. That met the experiment requirements perfectly.
